Species highlights

Bands are not the only pattern

A familiar California kingsnake is dark and pale rings, yet natural forms can also carry longitudinal stripes. Dramatically different-looking patterns may belong within one species.

Species names and captive colour-form names classify different things: evolutionary groups versus particular appearance or breeding backgrounds.

Following a mark into a ring, blotch or line makes variation an interesting part of biology rather than a failure to match one standard photograph.

At a glance

California kingsnakes are native to western North America and use scrub, grassland and drier habitats. The word “California” does not define a single climate. They explore mainly on the ground but also burrow and climb, adjusting activity to temperature.

Ground cavities, low vegetation and shelter edges support exploration, with timing changing as conditions change. Segments of a limbless body create useful supports.

Animal prey, constriction and egg-laying are more fundamental than a black-and-white image. Natural bands and stripes, plus captive variation, make colour an observation starting point rather than a complete identification.

Common names California Kingsnake; Lampropeltis californiae
Scientific name Lampropeltis californiae
Native rangeWestern North America, including parts of the western United States and Mexico
Adult sizeOften about 0.8–1.3 m total length
ActivityTerrestrial; also burrows and climbs low surfaces
Diet Use appropriately sized whole thawed rodents and adjust to condition. Do not feed other snakes as a display or interpret a strong feeding response as compatibility for cohabitation.

Habitat & care

House alone with secure locks, hides, clean water and warm-to-cool choices. Do not copy a humid land-and-water lizard habitat.

Values guide routine care, not breeding or brumation. Dimensions are length × width × height for one adult unless stated otherwise; larger animals need more space.

TemperatureBasking surface 29–32°C Cool-end air 21–26°C. General kingsnake husbandry reference; adjust for the animal’s origin.
Humidity40–60% A general kingsnake starting range, not a field measurement for this species; offer a humid hide and dry substrate areas.
LightingLight cycle & cover Maintain a day–night cycle; if UVB is used, allow voluntary access to shade.
Space120×60×60 cm Recommended starting size; length at least the snake’s full length, with width and height around half its length. Upgrade for larger animals.

Look a little closer

Follow one band or stripe and see how its apparent direction changes around a curve. At a branch, identify body sections that hold and those that continue moving. The pattern acts as a marker for following one section through continuous locomotion.

Care note: Its snake-eating behaviour rules out mixed-snake housing.
